Feeling a little better this morning, but not perfect, and it turns out that the juice place down the street is closed today.  I may have to take a brief weekend hiatus and start again monday.  It wouldn’t be the worst idea, that’s for sure.

Womp womp

It’s late on day 2 and I’m feeling faint and hot.  This is usually the point where you call it quits for fear of some serious issue cropping up.  I’m going to sleep on it and see how I am in the morning, but for all you juice fasters out there, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY!  Don’t stick to a 7 day fast if you start to feel sick after the first 36 hours.  You can always do it again some other time.

Sixth juice:
Tons of kale, tons of spinach, one parsnip, and two apples.

Impressions: tasty. However, I’ve started feeling faint tonight. I may have to cut the fast short.

The juicer I’m using. This is a great model, as is the Champion, an old school masticating-style unit. If you can, get a Breville in the $300 range. The cheaper ones bind up and don’t convert as high a percentage of matter into juice.

Juice #5:

  • 4 stalks of celery
  • 3 big handfuls of kale
  • 1 big handful of spinach
  • 2 small apples
  • ginger (i use raw, and i don’t use much.)

Impressions:  This is really what I was trying to do yesterday for lunch.  It’s tart but not sweet, green but not bitter, and the vitamin profile is through the roof.  Highly recommended.

Day Two Update

I don’t feel like shit.  That’s a big improvement from last night, when my head felt as if it was going to explode from hunger and hunger-related-anger.  And actually, I’m starting to feel as if today will be a good day from a hunger/wellness perspective. Optimism is pretty cool?

Here’s a quick tip for you: don’t watch too much television while fasting.  The commercials for gross food will make you seriously question your choices, at least in the first couple days.

Fourth juice:
Two carrots, two parsnips, one cucumber, three celery stalks, one apple, juice of one lemon, and cayenne pepper

Impressions: it’s like a virgin bloody mary, if you take out the tomato. Yum!

Juice 3:

Three carrots, tons of kale (1 lb?), 1 cucumber, 1 apple, some ginger.

Impressions: I was trying to make an awesome dinner juice and ended up with sludge instead. Blech.

A note on portions

I’m only on day one and I’ve already had someone ask me about portion size.  Your portion size is going to vary based on your weight, but here’s my breakdown:

I’m 6’ tall and I weigh around 200 pounds.  I’m trying to lose weight as well as cleanse during this week, so I’m actually consuming less than 1000 calories per day.

The mug in the photos holds 16 oz of juice.  I make 2x that and drink it slowly over the course of several hours.  I time my juice-making with “regular” meal time so it feels more comfortable.

You can do whatever you want, but don’t starve yourself.  You’re cleansing, not going on a diet.

Juice #2: Two celery stalks, one cucumber, two handfuls of kale, one apple.

Impressions: kinda bitter. But healthy! Next time I’ll do a larger apple.
